Larry Language Lover Posted March 28, 2025 at 03:50 PM Report Posted March 28, 2025 at 03:50 PM As a foreigner, when you have a long layover in another Chinese city can you leave the airport to see the city a bit, or are you only allowed to stay in transit areas? Quote
Singe Posted March 29, 2025 at 09:53 AM Report Posted March 29, 2025 at 09:53 AM Do you mean when you are travelling from overseas and are in transit? I went through China last year (Shanghai) and qualified for a 72 hour visa that I could apply for when I arrived. I was travelling on a New Zealand passport but China had relaxed the rules for a number of nationalities at the time. 1 Quote

If you are arriving in China on an international flight and your final destination is another country (not China,) then you could be eligible for 72-hour TWOV (transit without visa.) 2. If your international flight is stopping in a China gateway city and your final destination is elsewhere in China and you already have a China visa, then you could leave the airport to see some sights before proceeding. You would go through passport control. They would stamp your passport and your "visa clock" would start running. I have done both of those, but it has been over 5 years ago, so regulations might have changed. In my experience, "Getting creative" with long layovers can result in more hassle than it's worth, both with the airline and with China's Entry/Exit bureau when you arrive at your final destination elsewhere in China. Also, many times it takes longer than you think to exit the plane, collect checked luggage, store it temporarily, clear passport control, find transport into the city and so on. That easily can eat up a couple hours and needs to be factored into your personal decision-making process. Good luck! Hope you have a pleasant trip! Quote
