vellocet Posted December 14, 2025 at 10:44 AM Report Posted December 14, 2025 at 10:44 AM I used to use Touchpal keyboard for Android, and it was great. I recently powered on an old phone and it was still on there. Big fat keys, Swype input for both Chinese and English, perfect. Google banned Touchpal from Play so they're gone. All of the Chinese keyboards like Baidu, Sogou, etc. suck at English input. They're fine for Chinese but don't like you to use Pinyin input. They want you to use cursive handwriting, which is obviously not an option. I retreated to Google's own Gboard keyboard but after updating itself without me authorizing it, the new version sucks on purpose. Swype is only usable if you verrrrry carefully drag it over every single letter, which defeats the purpose of Swype. Carefully tapping in letter by letter misses often and writes the wrong letter. Pinyin prediction is awful, I type WZ and it won't predict Wenzhou despite me using that often, which is something all keyboards used to do, learn the pinyin abbreviations after choosing them the long way a few times. Obviously they're trying to "nudge"(deliberately irritate) you to use voice input. No, I don't like talking to nobody and my spoken Chinese doesn't conform to a voice recognition algorithm's idea of what it should sound like. Which Android keyboards do people use these days? Specifically not Apple. We were ordering at a restaurant and I got handed someone's phone: "you're the one who can read Chinese, you order." I was like, uh, how do I write Chinese on this thing? He took it back and handed it to me again with T9 input like it's 2005. Seriously? 1 Quote

Tomsima Posted December 15, 2025 at 01:53 AM Report Posted December 15, 2025 at 01:53 AM I am using gboard, I've dreamt about getting RIME set up properly on my phone but it's so complicated I still haven't got round to it Quote
vellocet Posted December 15, 2025 at 09:36 AM Author Report Posted December 15, 2025 at 09:36 AM What's rime? I had tried Swiftkeys before but uninstalled it for a reason I forget. I installed it again ad it wants to enable Copilot. Because obviously I'm supposed to stop using a keyboard and enable voice input. Ah right, it won't do Swype for pinyin, one tap at a time which is painfully slow. Cursive handwriting is fully supported though. Quote
