The Neolithic 8 (N8)

Hey, folks! Today, we’re diving into the story of the Neolithic 8 (N8): China’s prehistoric vibe squad, dropping bangers since 3000 BC! Flood control? Fire invention? These OGs, boasting billions of fans, were flexing harder than your favorite pop idols—catch them trending on the Yellow River charts!

Among this legendary crew, three were specially honored as the "Three Sovereigns(三皇Sān Huáng)" But which three? Well, there are a bunch of versions out there. Why? Because before writing, it’s all prehistory, which is where N8 made their mark. So, we’ve got legends and archaeology to piece it together. Most folks agree that the “Three Sovereigns” are Suiren (燧人氏), Fuxi (伏羲氏), and Shennong (神农氏), as noted in the "Records of the Grand Historian(史记Shǐ Jì)" by Sima Qian (司马迁Sīmǎ Qiān).

Alright, let’s give a warm welcome to our first superstar—Suiren, the rhythm master who lit up the Stone Age with fire! Think of him as China’s Prometheus, and the original BBQ king. Picture this: back in the day, life was rough—no Netflix, no Wi-Fi, no delicious grilled food, just chilly nights and raw seafood. Imagine shivering in the dark, dodging saber-toothed tigers, and chowing down on raw meat that’s probably not on any restaurant’s menu. Life felt like a survival reality show where every meal is a gamble and Yelp ratings are non-existent. Then, Suiren steps in.

One stormy day, lightning strikes a tree, and while everyone’s screaming and running, Suiren has a brilliant idea: “What if I can make that fire myself?” So, he grabs a stick and a piece of wood and starts his DIY fire experiment—think of it as the Stone Age version of MythBusters. He’s drilling away, sweating buckets, with blisters on his hands and coughing from the smoke, but still no fire. Just when he’s about to give up, lightning strikes again. And bam! He figures it out—friction equals heat, and enough friction equals fire!

He switches to a dry piece of wood, sharpens his stick, and goes at it again. The smoke’s getting thicker, and then—poof!—a flame pops up! Suiren jumps for joy, almost tripping over his own feet. Classic newbie move, but we’ll forgive him. He grabs that flame like it’s treasure, rushes back to his tribe, and shouts, “Check it out, I made fire!” The tribe gathers, eyes wide, staring at the flickering light. “What’s it for?” someone whispers. Suiren just grins and says, “Oh, you know, just for roasting, warming up, lighting up, and scaring away beasts. No biggie.”

That little spark was like hitting the power button for human civilization. Suiren pressed it, and life went from struggle to stride. Scare away beasts? Check. Stay warm? Absolutely. He invented not just fire, but an atmosphere—outdoor barbecues and gathering by the hearth for tea—he made it all possible. He’s like China’s Prometheus, but he didn’t have to steal his fire—so no eagle hassling him, of course!

There’s a little spark in all of us, just waiting to light up something big. In N8’s words? Suiren was the DJ who took the prehistoric playlist from ‘meh, nothing special’ to ‘party’s lit,’ and humanity’s been dancing to his beat ever since. So, next time you flick a lighter or grill a burger, give a shoutout to Sui Renshi—the OG fire-starter, N8’s hype king, who proved a solid spark can set the whole world ablaze. Now, who’s ready for N8’s next track?

It's well written. I really love reading. It's much better than the similar Chinese version I read as a kid. Maybe because you can see things more clearly as a foreigner.
