Can anyone help translate a quotation by Mao? If I could read his writing I could look things up, but I can't translate half of them. 

This was given to me by my sister after she visited China in the early 1970s. Many decades later, it made me go and visit the bridge (I was working not a million miles from Nanjing).

Is the 飞 character he used the old (non-simplified) form? I'd completely forgotten I needed to be thinking about that (as well as being really rusty in general).

Yes, Mao's calligraphy is always written based on the traditional characters, here the actual characters are: 一橋飛架南北,天塹變通途
