Hi. Glad to have seen this forum and have been reading some of the posts.

I am posting to seek guidance for a tattoo i’m planning to have.

I have been wanting to get a chinese character/s tattoo, however, I needed help to check if it’s the correct characters, the correct placement and that I am not disrespecting the culture.
I plan on getting “Fu”, “Lu”, “Shou” tattoo vertically with the chinese character Fu on top. I plan to place it on my left leg near the thigh area. The actual characters are attached.

seeking for advices please if these is acceptable as this will be my first tattoo. Any suggestions for the background? Your inputs/suggestion are much appreciated.

thanks.

Nice to hear you appreciate the aesthetic of Chinese characters and this being the motivation for the tattoo. 福祿壽 feels quite like an 'old person' kind of phrase, but at least Chinese people will see it and think at least there is some awareness of Chinese culture there. If you want something traditional, you could also consider a 成語 (4 character Chinese idiom) rather than this. As always, the advice we give here is, study some Chinese for a while (you're going to have this on your body for the rest of your life, so you can spare the time cost) until you can 'feel' what the characters you're getting tattooed really feel like in 'reality' (ie. not just behind the mystique of non-understanding). Hope this helps in your decision making.

tips:

  • 天道酬勤 (tiān dào chóu qín) – Heaven rewards the diligent

  • 海阔天空 (hǎi kuò tiān kōng) – The sky’s the limit

  • 心想事成 (xīn xiǎng shì chéng) – May all your wishes come true

  • 宁静致远 (níng jìng zhì yuǎn) – Calmness brings far-reaching goals

  • 厚德载物 (hòu dé zài wù) – Great virtue carries all things

Other thing would be to avoid characters downloaded offline, the calligraphy's nice enough but generic. Get someone to write them specially for you.
