New Members Jjwalker2720 Posted June 10, 2025 at 08:37 PM New Members Report Posted June 10, 2025 at 08:37 PM I want to get the quote “Let go or be dragged” tattooed in Chinese and want to check before I get it to make sure it’s right. When I put it into google translate and translate into traditional Chinese it comes out as: 放手或被拖曳 Does this look right? Still debating the font so if yall have any suggestions please let me know. jannesan Posted June 11, 2025 at 09:51 AM Report Posted June 11, 2025 at 09:51 AM pro tip: don’t get a tatoo of a google translation. you may want to do some research on whether there is an existing chinese idiom that is close to what you want to express. i don’t know what your statement is trying to express but i asked deepseek this: “is there any chinese idiom that expresses the same sentiment as “let go or be dragged” in english? explain what the statement could even mean” it came up with the following chinese idiom: 當斷不斷,反受其亂 (https://dict.cn/当断不断,反受其乱) Quote
Tomsima Posted June 11, 2025 at 10:37 AM Report Posted June 11, 2025 at 10:37 AM 當斷不斷,反受其亂 wouldnt that be like 'if you don't take decisive action, be prepared for disastrous consequences'? in the original suggestion 或 seems to read more like 或許 'might, perhaps' than the English 'or', thoughts? OP just get the tattoo in English, why try and hide it in Chinese? It will more likely make Chinese speakers laugh than anything else. Quote

It's like when we Americans see T-shirts that say "University of Harvard," we know they're fake because it's always written as "Harvard University." Quote
cqy Posted July 23, 2025 at 03:00 PM Report Posted July 23, 2025 at 03:00 PM in my opinion as a Chinese speaker 不舍,必受其累 (If you can't let go, you'll suffer from it) 心若不放,身必受困 (If your heart doesn’t let go, you will be trapped) 放下即自由 (Letting go is freedom) 1 Quote
