Hi! Please help I have never learned Chinese but my mother really liked Chinese dramas and we were wondering recently if it would be possible to translate our names literally and what they would sound like. The surname literally translates as "rowan" and my mother's name from Latin translates as "bear" meaning defender and mine as "justice" a righteous person. It looks a bit random but that's how often names work in our culture. The name can have a meaning independent of the surname. I tried using online translators but well... It didn't look quite well.

When translating names into Chinese, there are a few fun things to think about: how it sounds, what it means, how it looks, and the culture behind it. So, here are some cool Chinese name suggestions for you and your fam!

Surname: 栾 (Luán)
For your surname, “Rowan” can be phonetically translated as “罗文,” but honestly, it doesn’t capture the meaning of "rowan." Plus, names like “楸树” or “山茱萸树”, rowan's Chinese meaning, can’t really work as surnames in Chinese. So, I suggest 栾—it's got the tree meaning and sounds a lot like "Rowan," plus it’s totally in line with Chinese naming customs.

Mother's Name: 栾蓓佑 (Luán Bèi-yòu)
Now, about your mom’s name. "Bear" translates to 熊 in Chinese, but that’s not really fitting for a lady. Instead, how about "蓓佑"? It sounds kind of like "Bear" and has a lovely meaning: "蓓" is all about beauty and vitality, while "佑" means blessing and protection. It really reflects a mom's wish to keep her kids safe and thriving!

Your Name:
For your name, "Justice" translates to “正义,” but it doesn’t really have that nice ring to it. To keep things in the family vibe, let’s use "蓓" again:

- For a boy: 栾蓓义 (Luán Bèi-yì) — “义” means justice.
- For a girl: 栾蓓梓 (Luán Bèi-zǐ) — “梓” is a special tree in Chinese culture that symbolizes protection and safety.

So, the names “蓓佑,” “蓓义,” and “蓓梓” all vibe together nicely and totally look like they belong to the same family. Plus, they’re all linked to the Rowan tree, and the characters have some deep cultural significance, which totally fits with your mom’s love for Chinese drama and traditions.

What do you think? 😊
