Disclaimer: I work for LTL Flexi Classes

This Topic is for discussion of LTL Flexi Classes. Flexi Classes are a platform to study Mandarin online in group classes with flexible schedules. While there are many options to study 1on1 online with flexible schedules, studying in a group online usually requires a fixed schedule like Tue & Thur 7-9pm etc.

With Flexi Classes that is not needed and it is possible to study in group classes online 24/7 in all time zones. Each group class lasts one hour and classes follow the LTL Flexi Classes curriculum.

There is also a Flexi Classes forum and Flexi Classes Reddit thread.

The groups are small with a maximum of 5 students and prices very economical. Classes sizes are usually much smaller though. If one is lucky one can be the only student in a group class, getting effectively a 1on1 class, while paying only for a group class.

Any questions, thoughts, experience shares about Flexi Classes, this is the place to share them.

I tried LTL lessons when it first started during covid times. Although it was an ideal time to learn a language, I found I could not get into learning very well. Sometimes the Internet would be flaky because of China's firewall. I did a few sessions, found them okay and realised that having lessons with other people the majority of times doesn't quite suit me.

Meander around for a few years and I tried LTL again taking up the 6month package of group lessons equating to a frequency of four lessons a week. It was quite hectic even when taking HSK 3 lessons. A lot of teachers said I am HSK 4 learner level but I found it's a bit of a struggle and therefore I dropped back to HSK 3 level. I found this second time round, fewer students take the group class so I do get a one on one lesson for the price of the group class. I guess this happens more frequently the higher the level you go.

I also notice there are quite a few Vietnamese learners. Some are really good and are still taking HSK 3 lessons. Because of the 4 lessons a week, I felt a lot more progress than before. However, I didn't do any notes of vocabulary cards and there was a period of decay. To address that, I actually paid for a one on one lesson package.

The good things:

The six month group lessons were excellent for me and my irregular time schedule. I would have to do a mix and match style.

The forum was nice to have some interaction

It's great to be able to dip into some other languages using the same credits - that's a big advantage IMHO

If there's a problem and the lesson didn't happen, LTL are very quick to restore the credit.

The bad things:

I couldn't go through the lessons in order of the numbers due to my irregular schedule. That made me feel a little disorganised as some lessons had topics which were revision.

I felt I didn't have time to work through the lesson again - my retention is poor.

Even though I can do the HSK 4 lessons, I can cope but it's a bit of a struggle. I feel more time is spent struggling rather than learning. Some of the others in HSK group class struggle more than me though.

There is some variation in teaching ability - it's understandable considering the low price of the lessons. I am flexible with this as I regard the group classes as introduction or refresher classes.

The forum changed to reddit - I don't use reddit. For what purpose was the change?

You can't track easily when you have done a lesson. For example, I did lesson 120 six months ago but since then, I have done another 100 lessons. The summary indicates I have done the lesson but I can't track back to it quickly when I want to find the PDF notes associated with the lesson.

Solutions:

The discomfort I had at HSK 4 made me think my basics are not ingrained enough and therefore I need to repeat the HSK3 course but more systematically.

After a break, I booked more lessons on a one to one plan. It's more expensive but in fact, the credits purchased can be used for group classes as well.

I repeated the HSK 3+ lessons on group classes. This warmed me up.

I am repeating the lower level HSK 3 classes (currently in progress). As I have the basic gist of what's going on, the lessons are comfortable and I am adding vocabulary around the topic in a comfortable fashion (rather than feeling overloaded). I have a preference for a particular tutor who has a more systematic teaching methodology.

Finish the HSK3+ course in a similar way.

Maybe after that, do the HSK 4 lessons in a group. Or perhaps do the classes for traditional Chinese which presents the HSK 3 level material in a slightly different way.

thanks for sharing, I was thinking about signing on for a one on one package for Cantonese, do you think it's worth it? the group courses sound quite difficult to maintain rhythm (I also have a hectic schedule right now, newborn baby, full time work etc)

One on one package would be fine. I just checked and the course only goes to A1+ beginner.

Cantonese speaking teachers Jocelyn in New Zealand would be a good choice.

I just discovered something. My one to one classes I specified a teacher but she cancelled after initially accepting. I spoke to her asking her if she can't make a class, to let me know as I suddenly got a different teacher for my one to one class. She thought the class would be cancelled but LTL arranges another teacher to cover. After it happened a couple of times and after discussion with her, we realised what the situation was. I don't quite see the point of paying extra for private class without the teacher that I want. I would rather cancel and rearrange to another time.
